A full life means having confidence in the days ahead.
When diagnosed with a serious illness, it can be a very confusing and overwhelming time. Doctors provide a great deal of information about the condition, often with lots of details. Here are some questions to consider asking to help ensure your illness is understood:
- What does this mean?
- How serious is this?
- What are my options?
- When do I have to decide?
- What if I have more questions? Who can I contact?
- When can I schedule an advance care planning meeting?
Remember to take your time, write notes and repeat back what you understand the doctor to be saying. Don’t hesitate to ask for brochures and other resources about your condition and care options.
In addition to talking with your doctor, take time to learn more and determine what is best for you. To help with this, download our Serious Illness tri-fold brochure or consider asking for a palliative consultation, which is focused on helping you through a serious illness.
