When diagnosed with a serious illness, it can be a very confusing and overwhelming time. Physicians provide a great deal of information about the condition, often with lots of details. Here are some questions to consider asking to help ensure the prognosis is understood:
- What does this mean?
- How serious is this?
- What are my options?
- When do I have to decide?
- What if I have more questions? Who can I contact?
- When can I schedule an advance care planning meeting?
Remember to take your time, write notes and repeat back what you understand the physician to be saying. Don’t hesitate to ask for brochures and other resources about your condition and care options.
