Making an Informed Decision

Knowing that a loved one may be approaching the end of life is different than being prepared for it. Making decisions about hospice and palliative care can be overwhelming. Fortunately, you don’t have to make those decisions alone. Your doctor can help you determine if hospice or palliative care is appropriate.

How a Decision Is Made
Hospice or palliative care is usually considered when the diagnosis of a terminal illness is first made, or when there is a significant change in the condition of a person with an existing illness. Any of these events can prompt the patient’s doctor to make a referral for hospice services. It’s not always a doctor or nurse who suggests hospice. Sometimes it’s a friend or family member. Either way, a doctor will evaluate the patient to determine if hospice or palliative care is appropriate.
